Come learn the fascinating art of knot tying from a modern-day Merchant Marine.  He’ll take you from a Bowline to a Turks Head.  You’ll gain the skills to tie and the useful knowledge around the aesthetical and functional values of this traditional art utilized on land and at sea.  Materials will be provided.  Just bring your enthusiastic taste for adventure, and a few sea stories to tell. You may even learn a sea shanty song or two.

INSTRUCTOR BIO:

Alex Buchanan was born in Boston and raised there and here on the South Coast.  He is an artist and merchant marine who studied fine art at Tufts University and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Alex served four years active duty and began his journeys at sea in the U.S. Coast Guard. He focuses his art on maritime influences and conveys them as a visual language by layering literal and conceptual translations related to symbology such as Morse Code and other nautical traditions.  Alex is a member of Hatch Street Studios and currently an exhibiting artist at various locations.
