Seeing Stories: The Photographic and Literary Vision of Eudora Welty
Join us to experience the incredible photography of Eudora Welty, a Pulitzer prize-winning author of both fiction and nonfiction. Laura Bailet will share her story of how she came to possess the last set sold of Ms. Welty’s Twenty Photographs, published by Palaemon Press in 1980. She will draw parallels between Ms. Welty’s photographic and writing styles and consider common themes she explored in both artistic forms. The audience will have ample time to view the photos and share their own observations of her writing and photography.

Laura Bailet, a seasonal resident of S. Dartmouth, MA, received her B.A. in English literature from Wake Forest University, and her M.A. and Ph.D. in communicative disorders from Northwestern University. Having grown up in Charlotte, NC, she has had a longstanding interest in Southern literature. In 1981, she purchased set 75/75 of Eudora Welty’s Twenty Photographs, a project Ms. Welty undertook with Stuart Wright, a friend of Ms. Bailet’s and founder of Palaemon Press.
Ms. Bailet had an accomplished career as a psychologist in pediatric healthcare. Now retired, she is vice chair of the national Board of Directors for Reach Out and Read, in which pediatricians offer children’s books and developmental guidance during well checkups for young children.
