Indigo & Shibori: The Art of Japanese Resist Dyeing
Indigo & Shibori: The Art of Japanese Resist Dyeing
In this workshop students will learn the art of indigo vat dyeing using the ancient resistdyeing technique of Shibori. Commonly called tie-dye, this is not your 1960s t-shirt! Carefully placed wood blocks, clamps, rubber bands, string, and clips create geometricallover designs using natural, botanical indigo dye. Once mixed the indigo vat has a limitedlifespan. As the dye oxidizes it turns from bright green to a deep blues right before youreyes. Multiple dips into the vat create darker shades of blue.
Each student with create a 24” square cotton bandana and a 79 x 27 inches fringed cotton scarf.
Wear clothes you don’t mind getting a little dye on. You will be taking home damp articles. Please bring small plastic bags or containers to transport your new bandana and scarf.
$30.00 materials fee paid to the instructor at the start of the workshop.
Registration is limited to 8 students. You must register by July 3rd to ensure we will have the necessary supplies.
